Ten-year-old indigenous boy Dujuan is a live wire and a spiritual healer. Although he speaks three languages, he is ‘failing’ in school and facing scrutiny from welfare and the police in Alice Springs.

As Dujuan travels perilously towards close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrernte education alongside his Western schooling and prevent him from becoming another statistic. Director Maya Newell‘s close relationship with Dujuan and his Arrernte and Garrwa family ensures remarkable access as the story unfolds in this arresting follow up to Gayby Baby.

Crediting Dujuan and his family members as co-directors … Newell lets her indigenous subjects largely tell their own stories - The Gate
