CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND – DIRECTOR’S CUT is actually the third iteration of the iconic 1977 Steven Spielberg film, this version was released in 1998 and followed on from the 1980 “Special Edition” version that was re-released in cinemas with newly shot big budget scenes added. The Directors Cut is considered a combination of the two previous versions, it features some of the newly shot scenes as well as reintroducing some key scenes that were cut from the Special Edition, as a result it comes in at 5 minutes longer than the Special Edition and 2 minutes longer than the Theatrical Edition. It is a distinctly different film to the previous iterations and is the ones that one Spielberg considers the final version.
