Fifteen years ago, Mel and Jen discovered they were being two timed by the same man. Bitter and cynical, they formed The Breaker Upperers, a small-time business breaking up couples for cash. Now, in their late-Thirties, business is booming.
JACKIE VAN BEEK (Writer, Director and plays ‘Jen’) has made seven award-winning short films produced in Australia, New Zealand and the UK that have played at numerous international festivals including Berlin, London, Palm Springs and MIFF. Jackie won SPADA New Filmmaker of the Year in 2013 and was awarded first prize by WIFT INTERNATIONAL for her short film Uphill in 2015. As an actor, she is best known for her role in Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s critically acclaimed vampire movie, What We Do in the Shadows, and as the straight-talking Gloria in Australia’s Channel 7 popular drama 800 Words. Her first feature film, The Inland Road, premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017 and is currently on the festival circuit. She recently directed on the television spin-off for What We in the Shadows, Wellington Paranormal.
MADELEINE SAMI (Writer, Director and plays ‘Mel’) has created, co-written and starred in two seasons of critically acclaimed New Zealand comedy Super City. Super City was piloted by US network ABC, which Madeleine also starred in. Madeleine directed the second season of the hit sketch comedy show Funny Girls (named the top NZ TV show of 2016 by The Spinoff). As an actor, Madeleine has starred in Sione’s Wedding and Sione’s Wedding Two, Taika Waititi’s Eagle vs Shark and What We Do in The Shadows, and most recently in the western Slow West. Her extensive TV acting credits include Outrageous fortune, The Jacquie Brown Diaries and Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake.
