Made In Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Liam Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Micheál Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair…
A fresh and distinctive take on Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical masterpiece, The Personal History of David Copperfield, set in the 1840s, chronicles the life of its iconic title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it. From his unhappy childhood to the discovery of his gift as a storyteller and writer, David’s journey is by turns hilarious and tragic, but always full of life, colour and humanity.
An exciting new film fest from the Czech Republic and Slovakia!
This year, in keeping with the current trend in filmmaking of telling real life stories, several of these are included in the festival’s program. For instance, the excellent opening night feature, a Czech Film Critics 2018 Winner JAN PALACH, is a reenactment of the last months in the life of a history student who ultimately became a part of history himself. Or David Ondrícek’s DUKLA 61, one of the most remarkable Czech TV productions of recent times examines the largest Czech mining disaster of the Communist era through the eyes of a man working at the mine along with his son. Last but not least, the documentary ROBERT VANO – THE STORY OF A MAN/ROBERT VANO - PRÍBEH CLOVEKA is about the famous Slovak photographer now once again living in the Czech Republic after decades spent in the US. His is a fascinating life story with some truly unexpected twists and turns.
For our comedies this year, don’t miss Miloš Forman’s Oscar nominated masterpiece THE FIREMEN’S BALL / HORÍ MÁ PANENKO from 1967 or our closing night international premiere of Rudolf Havlík’s excellent comedy WHAT MEN LONG FOR/PO CEM MUŽI TOUŽÍ – the biggest box office hit of 2018 which surpassed even the biggest US blockbusters in popularity.
Accompanying our feature films, this year, as with previous years, we are also particularly pleased to be able to screen some of the best award-winning shorts such as FRUITS OF CLOUDS / PLODY MRAKU or THE LAST BUS/POSLEDNÝ AUTOBUS, to name just a couple.
